Dream Courts Open in Dallas on Day of Remembrance

Dream Courts Open in Dallas on Day of Remembrance

Plano, TX – July 7, 2017 — WorldVentures Foundation™ and Nancy Lieberman Charities teamed with the Dallas Police Department, Dallas Park and Recreation Department, and donors to bring hope and healing to the community with the opening of two Dream Courts™ one year to the day following last year’s tragic police shootings. Built in underserved communities, Dream Courts are state-of-the-art play spaces where children can shoot hoops and develop life skills including teamwork.

There are 37 Dream Courts nationwide, and the openings on July 7 bring the Dallas total to eight. The newest courts are located at Kiest Park, 3080 S Hampton Road, one of 379 parks maintained by the Dallas Park and Recreation Department. Bank of America and United Way donated to one court, and local philanthropists Tom Lamphere and Jan Richey funded the second court.

"We're honored and privileged to be able to align ourselves with our Dallas Police and our local community to help create change and build relationships through trust and understanding. Our Dream Courts bring people together. Sports is one of the great equalizers in life and to bring different cultures together," said Nancy Lieberman, a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame who made history in 2015 when she was hired by the Sacramento Kings, becoming only the second female assistant coach in NBA history.

Former Dallas Police Chief David Brown played an important role in Dream Courts, working with Lieberman after retiring from the force last October. Brown, now an ABC News contributor, spoke at the event, expressing his gratitude for the courts and the “mentoring, character building, trust building and life-skills building” they will provide for neighborhood children.

“The WorldVentures Foundation’s commitment to children and their communities continues in this gift to South Oak Cliff. We are honored to partner with Nancy Lieberman Charities to make a difference on this day of remembrance,” said Gwyneth Lloyd, executive director, WorldVentures Foundation.

Mayor Pro Tem Dwaine R. Caraway, Dallas City Council was among the dignitaries. Following the ribbon-cutting ceremony, which was emceed by Fox 4 News sports anchor Mike Doocy, children participated in an open-court “shootaround” with police, DJ Poizon Ivy provided entertainment, and Youth ROTC Color Guard and Rock Teen Youth Mentorship put on a stomp performance. Campisi’s provided pizza and drinks for the children. Keane Landscaping Company donated five trees in honor of the fallen officers.
